| Vertebrate Fossil Preparator/Curator Essential functions: Prepare micro- and macro- fossil specimens (vertebrate, invertebrate, and botanical) for research and exhibit. Mold and cast specimens for research, exhibit, and exchange. Make specimen mounts for storage and exhibition, using welded steel, fiberglass, and other materials. Teach and supervise students and volunteers in various techniques of fossil preparation. Assist in all aspects of the physical maintenance of the fossil collections. Oversee the security and general maintenance and cleanliness of the building, including interfacing with Facilities Services staff. Assist in maintaining the existing database for fossil and recent specimens and in managing digital images for use in an online database. Organize and execute field work in vertebrate paleontology, adhering to all permitting and legal requirements for each field area. Must be willing to teach entry-level paleontology classes at community college and presentations at K-12 level. Marginal/Incidental functions Other related functions as assigned. Required qualifications Bachelor's degree, with a major in paleontology or related field. Two years of experience in fossil preparation, with thorough knowledge of standard procedures and best practices; experience with a variety of tools and techniques. Demonstrated skill and experience in molding and casting using a variety of materials and techniques. Experience with museum collections, including various conservation methods and collection databases. Knowledge of taxonomy. Keen attention to detail for accurate record keeping, cataloging, and documentation. Experience organizing and participating in field work under demanding conditions. Excellent communications skills and interpersonal skills to facilitate work with students, volunteers, tribal members and activities with the public. Ability to work as part of a team or independently. Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Working conditions May work in all weather conditions. May work in extreme temperatures. May work around chemical fumes. May work around standard office conditions. May work around chemicals. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity. Climbing of ladders. Lifting and moving. Security Sensitive; criminal background check conducted. Field work, where conditions could be various combinations of hot, dry, wet, and cold, and where there are few physical amenities (such as showers). Must be able to lift 75 pounds and operate lifting equipment such as fork lifts, pallet jacks, and winch hoists. | |
